On August 26, 2022, in Lausanne, Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra became the first Indian to triumph in a Diamond League competition.
The 24-year-old javelin thrower who won the silver at the World Championships in the USA last month — also a first for the country — opened with an impressive 89.08m and that turned out to be the winning throw in the end.
Chopra, who missed the last Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, had three throws that were valid after making it through his third and fifth attempts. The victory makes Chopra to qualify for the Diamond League finals in Zurich next month.
After the event chopra said, “I am delighted with my result tonight. 89m is a great performance. I am specially pleased as I am coming back from an injury and tonight was a good indicator that I have recovered well,”
He also told how he had to skip Commonwealth Games due to injury and was a bit nervous.
Chopra also qualified for the 2023 World Championships which are to be held in Budapest, Hungary.
